Pick-and-Roll Basics: Reads for the Ball Handler, Screener, and Defense

A ball handler and screener executing a pick-and-roll

The pick-and-roll is a two-player action that involves all five offensive players. A screener creates an obstacle for the on-ball defender, then moves or “rolls” into space. The ball handler reads the coverage, while teammates maintain spacing and react to help.

Before the screen

The screener should establish legal position and a useful angle. The ball handler sets up the defender rather than arriving too early. Off-ball teammates provide passing windows by occupying the corners, wing, slot, or dunker area according to the offense.

Common defensive coverages

CoverageBasic offensive question
DropIs the pull-up, pocket pass, or rim finish available?
SwitchCan either player attack the new matchup?
Blitz or trapCan the ball escape to the screener or weak side?
Show and recoverCan the handler maintain the dribble until the opening appears?
UnderIs the shot available, or should the screen be reset?

The screener’s decisions

Rolling is only one option. The screener may short roll into passing space, pop to the perimeter, re-screen, slip before contact, or screen away after the ball moves. The choice depends on skill, coverage, and teammates.

A three-stage learning plan

  1. Practice two-on-zero timing and legal screening.
  2. Add one defender and identify a single coverage.
  3. Progress to three-on-three so help and spacing become real.

Film review should focus on the moment the coverage becomes clear, not only the final result. A missed shot can follow the correct read, and a made shot can follow a poor one.

Screens must be taught with legal position, body control, and age-appropriate contact.
