Basketball Court Safety Checklist: Surface, Equipment, Heat, and Emergency Planning

A coach inspecting the court surface and equipment before practice

A safe basketball session begins before warm-up. Coaches and organizers should inspect the court, equipment, environmental conditions, participant health information, and emergency plan rather than assuming a familiar gym is risk-free.

Pre-session inspection

AreaCheck
SurfaceWater, dust, debris, uneven sections, loose coverings
Basket structureStable support, padding, intact rim and net
BoundariesClear run-off space without bags, chairs, or spectators
Ball and footwearAppropriate inflation, fit, and traction
EnvironmentHeat, humidity, ventilation, lighting, and hydration access

Emergency preparation

  • Know the exact venue address and emergency access point.
  • Identify who calls emergency services and who meets responders.
  • Know the automated external defibrillator location.
  • Keep emergency contacts and relevant participant information available.
  • Ensure first-aid supplies are maintained and accessible.

Heat and hydration

Adjust intensity, breaks, and clothing for heat and humidity. Confusion, collapse, severe weakness, or altered behavior may indicate serious heat illness and requires urgent action.

Do not return injured players by guesswork

Suspected concussion, severe pain, inability to bear weight, breathing difficulty, or neurological symptoms need appropriate assessment. A player should not be pressured to continue because the game is important.
