Film study becomes useful when it answers a narrow question. Watching highlights confirms outcomes; studying possessions reveals spacing, timing, coverage, and the decisions that created those outcomes.
Choose one question
- How does the defense guard side pick-and-roll?
- Where does help come from on drives?
- Why are turnovers occurring?
- What happens after an offensive rebound?
- Which actions create the best shots?
Use a repeatable review
| Pass | Focus |
|---|---|
| First viewing | Watch the possession normally |
| Second viewing | Track all five players on one team |
| Third viewing | Pause before the key decision and predict |
| Final note | Record one pattern and one actionable change |
Separate decisions from results
A correct pass can lead to a missed shot. A poor shot can go in. Grade whether the player recognized the defense and created an appropriate option, then record the outcome separately.
Keep clips ethical and secure
Follow league, school, and platform rules when recording or sharing minors. Do not publish private team video, medical information, or humiliating compilations without permission.
